The Mule

The mule is one of the easiest and versatile cocktails you can make. There is typically only three ingredients and you can switch it up as you see fit. The traditional Moscow Mule uses vodka as the spirit, the Mexican Mule uses tequila, and the Kentucky Mule uses bourbon. Pick your flavor and go with it. The key to a good mule is quality ingredients. Use a good spirit, and a high quality ginger beer. I like Q ginger beer because it has just a hint of cayenne pepper that really brings out the ginger flavor.

Ingredients

Units Scale

1.5 oz vodka, tequila, or bourbon
7.5 oz ginger beer
1/2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice

Instructions

In a highball glass or a copper mug for the traditionalist, combine and stir the ingredients. Serve over ice and garnish with mint or a lime wedge.

Notes

Ginger beer can vary greatly in the amount of sweetness present as well as the ginger flavor (or lack thereof). Try several brands to see what suits your style. We prefer Q, my buddy who likes his mules…sturdy…ahem, prefers Bundaberg. All are good quality mixers but certainly favor some flavors over others. Try them all and experiment with your spirits!
