Why Are We Doing This Exactly?

Great question! We talk almost every day about becoming expats and retiring abroad, wondering how to make this happen. We research what kind of visas we need—which, we have learned, varies based on which country we’re interested in. We palaver about what expat income taxes will be and whether retiring abroad is as financially lucrative as every story we read seems to imply. We collect information about the expat lifestyle but are still a bit hesitant to jump in with both feet (or all four, in our case). We aren’t interested in schools, but are keen to know where we can live that dreamy expat life. This blog is a collection of information we have gathered in our ongoing search for ‘that place’, and we believe that other people are curious about the same things. This is our opportunity to share what we know now, and what we continue to learn each day. We look forward to collaborating!

Spotlight on Mexico

Mexico is certainly in our top three locales to retire abroad. The warm climate, sandy beaches, and vibrant culture drive us south of the border year after year. For the taco aficionado, there’s no shortage of excellent choices, tequila drinkers will find lots of small distilleries unimpeded by celebrity branding, and the favorable exchange rate with the US dollar allows your money to go a bit further and support a vibrant local economy.

Many question the safety of Mexico, but I can assure you that you can find trouble anywhere in the world if you look for it. Be aware of your surroundings and you’ll be just fine. Tourists doing dumb things will always make headlines. The people are friendly, the destinations are stunning, and the food is first rate. Don’t let a few horror stories dissuade you from getting off the beaten path either…there’s more to Mexico than the resorts.
